Please note that I have no connection with any
of the sites or companies mentioned here, other than membership
of some of the societies. Those listed here are those which I have
personally found useful in the past, or are informative in their
own right. If you wish to suggest any other
sites please let me know.

|
| GENUKI
- Huge site with masses of links for whichever county you
are interested in. |

- Another huge site with links to thousands of message boards,
from county lists to lists for specific names. There is plenty
of other information on this site as well! |
| CYNDISLIST
- A site built to provide links to other genealogy sites,
there are literally thousands of sites linked through here,
you are certain to find something of interest. |

WEBSITES HOLDING SEARCHABLE
DATABASES
|
|
It is important
to remember that, wherever these sites are used and copies
of documents cannot be viewed on-line, then these original
records should be consulted if at all possible in order
to confirm the information shown. Indexes and/or transcriptions
are not always fault free, however hard we try!
|
|
The first four sites offer various
census returns, GRO indexes, transcriptions etc on a subscription
or pay-as-you-go basis. They all have their own strengths
and weaknesses, they are listed here in no order other than
alphabetical. There are other sites offering similar resources.
|
|
The remaining sites shown below are
free to access unless stated.
|
| ACCESS
TO ARCHIVES - Here you can search the holdings of hundreds
of Record Offices for documents. Records themselves can't be
viewed on-line but you will be able to find the location of
items and often other information simply from the description
of items within the text. |
| BRITISH
HOME CHILDREN - Site for some - not all - of the children
who travelled across to Canada under the Government sponsored
scheme. |
| FAMILYSEARCH
- This site is run by the LDS - holds millions of baptism and
marriage records as transcribed by the LDS, 1880 US census index,
1881 UK census index and many more records added by LDS Church
members. |
| FREEBMD
- Ongoing site placing transcripts of the GRO Birth, Marriage
and Death indexes on-line. There are many millions of records
already available, and you can help with the transcription yourself. |
| FREECEN
- Similar site to that above, but in this case is concerned
with placing census transcripts on-line. Many are already available,
but this is a long-term project and so will grow over the years
as more volunteers are found to help (hint!). |
| FREEREG
- Once again, a site in the same vein as FREEBMD, this time
concerned with placing transcripts of parish registers on-line.
Many are already available, but this is a long-term project
and so again will grow over the years as more volunteers are
found to help (further hint!). |
| HISTORICAL
DIRECTORIES - This site is placing searchable
copies of Trade Directories on-line. Many hundreds are
already available covering all counties and periods, and
more are planned. An excellent resource where original
pages can be viewed. |
|
| UKBMD
- A site acting as a "portal" to various local
authority sites holding Birth, Marriage and Death indexes. |
